We are very pleased to offer you the very first book on Madeline Island's
unique windsled history. In the book you will find a total of 14 chapters
all filled with great stories beautiful photos and high quality drawings.
The first, "Life On An Island", will take you back to a time when crossing
the ice filled channel between Madeline and Bayfield could cost you your life.
Chapter 2, "A Winter On Madeline", the 1946-47 ferry boat hull design,
windsled season and ice-harvest.
Chapter 3, "First Of Many", the life of Bernard Russell "father of the windsled".
Chapter 4, "The First Commercial Windsled", built out of Ford automobile parts,
the Hielscher and Gilbert windsled was the first to haul passengers and freight to
and from the Island.
Chapter 5, "The Russell Brothers", Howard and Jimmy try to expand their ferry
service into a year-round transportation business by purchasing the Bayfield
windsled "Maybe", a great chapter.
Chapter 6, "Howard's Dream Sled", this chapter details the construction and
operation of Madeline's very first boat-hull or floating windsled.
Chapter 7, "Nels Dahlin Windsleds", Island craftsman Nels Dahlin describes
his many years of constructing and operating Island windsleds.
Chapter 8, "A Sled Of His Own", Elmer Nelson's personal windsled constructed
out of an old Piper Cub fuselage.
Chapter 9, "Harry's First Sled", ferry owner Harry Nelson enters the windsled
service with a beautiful boat-hull windsled.
Chapter 10, "Harry's Second Sled", with the success of the first sled Harry
builds his second boat-hull sled.
Chapter 11, "The First All Terrain Windsled", Harry Nelson's biggest and best
windsled, first aluminum hull, first to have wheels, aluminum prop. and hydraulic system. a sled that is still in use today!
Chapter 12, "Nelson Brothers and Windsleds Inc.", after a tragic plane crash that took the life of Harry Nelson, two of his sons, Arnie and Ronnie continue creating their own chapter in Island history.
Chapter 13, "Tragedy Strikes", the story of the first and only fatal accident
involving a windsled in the Apostle Islands area.
Chapter 14, "The Madeline Island Ice Road", a very detailed look into the 1999-2000
ferry boat, ice-road and windsled season, a great chapter.
