ICE RESCUE SQUAD:

The La Pointe Ice Rescue Squad, consists of three very different but equally important positions, 1- Operator, 2- Specialists, 1- EMT. A total of (4) Specialists form a Squad. Before a volunteer can hold any of these positions, he or she must first complete all requirements for each position. Specialists trained in multiple positions is encouraged, but currently only one is trained for all three, Squad Member Tim Eldred.


WINDSLED OPERATOR:

QUALIFICATIONS: Member of La Pointe Volunteer Fire Dept., hold a Fire Fighter Level 1 certificate, Emergency Vehicle Operators certificate, receive an Ice Rescue certificate from Dive Rescue International. Pass extensive windsled training program, classroom and practical. Attend class on CPR and patient handling.

DUTIES: While on route, the Operator is responsible for the Windsled and passengers. He or she must choose the appropriate route and speed. Operators do not generally perform rescue duties outside of the craft. Operators generally remain seated at the wheel during the entire rescue.


ICE RESCUE SPECIALIST:

QUALIFICATIONS: Member of La Pointe Volunteer Fire Dept., hold a Fire Fighter Level 1 certificate, Emergency Vehicle Operators certificate, receive an Ice Rescue certificate from Dive Rescue International. Attend class on CPR and patient handling.

DUTIES: Perform the surface ice rescue operation outside of the craft. Follow orders from Incident Commander. On route, assist Operator by performing navigation and communication duties. Operate search light and prepare equipment for rescue. Assist EMT with patient care.


EMT:

EMT-1

QUALIFICATIONS: Must be a certified EMT and receive an Ice Rescue certificate from Dive Rescue International.

DUTIES: Oversee patient care including extraction from water, position in windsled, medical aid and comfort.


TRAINING:

For all Squad members, training never ends. The only way to work as a team is to train as a team. Our motto, "The desire to serve, the courage to act, the ability to perform." Ice Rescue Squad members must participate in training exercises to remain an active member.
